It's not hard to work out why someone like Carl Barat might be a little defensive on some subjects. After all, he's just trying to get on with life after The Libertines, the band he co-fronted with Pete Doherty. While Barat ducked under the parapet, his cutting almost entirely limited to the music press, Doherty went over the top to become a man so vilified by the British tabloids it borders on national obsession.

How differently things have turned out for two men who can fairly claim to have resurrected guitar bands from the post-dance music malaise in British music.

The Libertines were officially disbanded in December 2004, but the fissure started long before, most notably when Doherty broke into Barat's London home and stole, among other things, an antique guitar and an NME award. Doherty was sentenced to six months in prison, served two, and was then welcomed back into the band upon his release.

But the fractious recording of their second eponymous album - security guards were allegedly hired to keep the two frontmen apart - coupled with Doherty's spiraling drug problem, proved to be too much. The Libertines ultimately disbanded and Doherty went off to form Babyshambles.

Barat, meanwhile, hooked with Libertines drummer Gary Powell, former Cooper Temple Clause bassist Didz Hammond, and Anthony Rossomando, to form Dirty Pretty Things, which has been signed on by Vertigo Records.

With some tentative shows scheduled in France and Italy, things are looking good again for Barat. But will they measure up to his former glory and the raw volatility that drew so many towards The Libertines? It's hard to judge. Barat, while faultlessly polite, is either desperately modest, or interview shy. Then again, who can blame him? He's wary of questions about Doherty, their fights on stage, and the drugs. He's also jetlagged, following three days of shows and flesh pressing at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.

"[Dirty Pretty Things] is equally as fiery, but this time all the fire is focussed out of the band instead of in," mumbles Barat. "We're all facing the same direction. I don't think I spent a quarter of what I have to say in the last band."

Barat often says 'the last band' when referring to The Libertines, perhaps an indication that while things are looking up, old wounds have yet to heal. "I've learned a few lessons. I'm much less green. It's a bit of a dark past for me, really. It all felt like a rising inescapable tide behind me," he says.

Barat learned much more than the average youth in his formative years too, growing up in various communes around the southwest of England with his mother. "It was a pretty unorthodox way to grow up," he says. "But I learned a lot about life and about phoney people and about drugs from a very early age."

"It's a dangerous ground," Barat added. "If you're doing drugs and you know it's giving you a new insight and new vision, but you can step in and out of it, then there's a reason... But it's a bit of a scourge otherwise. It fucks a lot of people up."

Unlike Doherty, Barat is acutely aware that what he says may influence impressionable young fans to do something they could later regret. Throughout our meeting, he qualifies comments with phrases such as "not that I'm saying people should do that" and "I'm not condoning that sort of thing."

You could be forgiven for thinking that lyrically, some of Barat's new material, and in particular the first single Bang Bang You're Dead, might be aimed squarely at Doherty. "What did you expect? Bang bang you're dead, always so easily led."

Though Barat denies his new material is about his former band mate, his explanation of what it is about easily calls up their volatile relationship. "It's about the death of a dream, coming to terms with the end of something, moving on and starting again," says Barat. Does he get upset when people assume the songs are about Doherty? "It does, because people feel they have to wallow in this mythology," he says. "If they give us a chance, we can give them something else. A lot of the songs come from the same place. I've been careful not to continue conversations of the past, which is something we used to do a lot."

Barat says he has no relationship with Doherty at the moment; they last spoke at New Year. But he hopes things can be reconciled. "If and when he's better and dealt with some of his demons, something I can't really help with, then there's every reason there for us to be friends."

No doubt to the delight of their female fans, Barat and Doherty frequently performed bare-chested while sharing a microphone. Was there ever a frisson of sexual electricity?

"Maybe there was mate, but I was just getting on with the songs. I never played on it, but then I don't know how far a brotherly friendship goes. Is there a sexuality there? I don't know. Maybe there is. You'd have to ask the missus," jokes Barat.

Barat is certainly a handsome guy, but he wears it modestly. "I wouldn't go that far," he says. "It's flattering, but I would be disappointed if that was the only reason people were into the music." Yet, whether he likes it or not, Barat is the subject of pages upon pages of online Slash Fiction, where fans invent often homosexual stories involving their idols. Barat and Doherty's relationship was a particularly popular area of endeavour.

"I'm aware of it, but it's not choice reading for me. Would you like to read stuff like that about you?" says Barat. "If it has a literary basis, I think it's good and healthy and I stand by it. But I'd rather they laid off me and my supposed homosexual tendencies. It does make me uncomfortable to read it, but as long as people realise it's fiction then I have no problem with it."

The burgeoning hype, at least, will send Dirty Pretty Things into the stratosphere. This is thanks in no small part to manager Alan McGee, arguably the most important individual in British music for a generation: he discovered Oasis, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, and The Libertines, of course. McGee says he has every confidence in the success of his latest project.

"We were invited out to Mexico because The Libertines had had a number one there," McGee recalls. "But as there was no band, they just asked Carl to do a DJ gig instead. It was fucking insane. There were about a thousand Mexican fans being beaten up by the security because they were trying to get their shoes signed by Carl. This was the first post Libertines event: Dirty Pretty Things hadn't even been formed yet!"

"There's a camaraderie with [Dirty Pretty Things] that didn't seem to be there with The Libertines," he adds. "I think it's limitless where we can go."

McGee is fighting to the hilt in Barat's corner: "He's forced a lot of people to eat their words. People who said his contribution to The Libertines was only sonically and not the song writing, well think again. He's been through his mourning of The Libertines and come out the other side. It's not pretty apparent that Carl was the musical side to The Libertines and Pete was the lyrical side."

To prevent the creation of another headline-grabber like Doherty, McGee will ensure his new charges don't court the tabloids. "Tabloid coverage does not equate to record sales," he says.

"I look back and I'm glad not to have that pain on a daily basis," says Barat when asked about what the past few years have thrown at him. "They're certain things I miss, but [the lifestyle] would have killed me very quickly. But yes, I am relieved and very excited about having something new. And I couldn't ask for a group of better fellows."

CARL'S ONE

A short film starring Carl Barat has surfaced online.

Called 'Two British Dudes', the film features Barat playing two roles simultaneously (see picture), having a conversation with himself outside a toilet.



Har Mar Superstar also makes a cameo towards the end of the film, coming out of the toilet and walking away from the camera hand-in-hand with Barat.

Since splitting Dirty Pretty Things in October 2008, Barat has appeared as Gene Vincent in 'Telstar' – the Nick Moran-directed biopic of Joe Meek.

'Two British Dudes' was directed by Ryan Rickett, who has also worked on videos for The Pigeon Detectives and .

In other Libertines news, Pete Doherty last night (August 25) reunited with the band's former drummer Paul 'Mr Razzcocks' Dufour in London, playing a raft of rare and unreleased songs from their early days.

PETE'S ONE

Pete Doherty has confirmed his plan to reform The Libertines to play UK festivals in 2010.

The Babyshambles frontman told NME.COM that he had already convinced former bandmates John Hassall [bass] and Gary Powell [drums] to reunite for gigs, and that as soon as Carl Barat agreed, dates would be finalised.

Barat had previously told NME.COM that he and Doherty had "left it as next year" in terms of Libertines plans.

"It's going to happen [The Libertines playing festivals], you know," Doherty said. "I spoke to John Hassall, he's well up for it." Referring to Powell, he added, "He said he would [play the shows]."

Doherty went on to joke that he was so desperate to play the festival shows he would even consider hiring a Carl Barat lookalike to stand in if the real one wouldn't sign up.

"Maybe I could reform The Libertines without him, like he did without me [Barat played Libertines shows without him in 2004 when Doherty was kicked out of the band for drug use]," he said. "I'll put an advert in NME: 'Carlos lookalike required'."

Pete Doherty is set to play at the V Festival this weekend (August 22-23) as a solo artist.

According to this article, Peter will feature in season 2 of "Photo Sévices," a Swiss sitcom about a worker at a photo lab. Out in mid-December; ten 8-minute episodes. He seems to play himself, or a rock star similar to himself.

CARL BARAT tells me he and ex bandmate PETE DOHERTY have busy been putting their heads together to get a date in for THE LIBERTINES reunion next year.

BABYSHAMBLES frontman Pete has made no secret of his desire for his old band to reform.

And Carl says the pair have been discussing plans at length over the phone in recent weeks.

Carl said: "Lots of people have come up to me saying a reunion would be a good idea. And I do think so too.

"I'd love to do it. It was a good band.

"I don't want to just do gigs. I want to make new material."

"We haven't got a date yet but it will happen if Pete stays on his current trajectory."

"Pete's very keen and persuasive. He rings me up and tells me he going to keep on the straight and narrow."

Carl has recently made a move into acting and his new film Telstar also opens the Notting Hill Film Festival tonight.

He plays 1950s rocker GENE VINCENT in NICK MORAN's new flick about the crazy life of music guru JOE MEEK which also stars JUSTIN HAWKINS, JAMES CORDEN and RALF LITTLE.

Carl says: "It was fun to film. I was so nervous but it's definitely given me the acting bug so I'm now going to have some lessons so I can try and do a bit more at a later date."

And Tango Makes Three

Plot synopsis

Roy and Silo, two New York Central Park Zoo male Chinstrap Penguins similar to those pictured, became internationally known when they coupled and later were given an egg that needed hatching and care, which they successfully did.[2]

The book is based on the true story of Roy and Silo, two male Chinstrap Penguins in New York's Central Park Zoo who for six years formed a couple. The book follows part of this time in the penguins' lives. The pair were observed trying to hatch a rock that resembled an egg. When zookeepers realized that Roy and Silo were both male, it occurred to them to give them the second egg of a mixed-sex penguin couple, a couple which had previously been unable to successfully hatch two eggs at once. Roy and Silo hatched and raised the healthy young chick, a female named "Tango" by keepers, together as a family.

krn suka ama lagu sebelom The Clash, akhirnya nanya ke si DJ bohongan yg Carl banget, tapi dia ternyata gak tau =______= trus kita pindah tempat duduk, bisa ngeliat si DJ bohongan yg Carl banget lebih frontal xD xD xD dia sering digodain ama cowo² hahahahaha parah. digodain ama Rimba juga (aka si DJ beneran). sangat sangat sangat bottom lah si DJ bohongan yg Carl banget itu. sok² nge-DJ padahal muterin lagu pake CD. trus pake headphones yg kayanya gak nyala, soalnya dia bisa nelpon sambil pake headphones, padahal lagu lagi diputer x') Carl banget.

pas mulai bosen nebak² lagu di luar, kita liat orang² udah mulai berebut masuk ke venue. kirain The S.I.G.I.T udah mulai, krn emang udah ada suara musik dari dalem, jadi aja kita masuk... ternyata Speaker's First aka band hair metal favorit pensi² di Bandung =___= rambut gede² & aransemen musik ala band² metal jaman dulu yg bersolo gitar nguing nguing ngiiiiinnngggg x) kata siapa band sekarang udah gak peduli ama solo gitar? x) pas udah lagu ke berapa gitu, vox nya nanya "pada suka Zeppelin kan?" dan aryan denger ada penonton yg ngomong "saha japelin?" xD xD xD xD lagu terakhir, feeling nya dapet banget pas penonton singalong "ketika dunia milik kita, yang lain gak ada" aaaawww bless :')

dan akhirnya mulai The S.I.G.I.T!! :') intro riff... tarararaa, rararaaaa, tarara-ra-raaaaa... Black Amplifier!! WAUWAUWUUAHWUAHDKAHWDUJHASHDD abis itu udah lupa mereka main lagu apa aja. ahem. but after the first 10 songs (mostly from the 1st album), they did acoustic set. oh my my mymymymymyyyyyyy... playing Black Amplifier again, but...

abis itu kolaborasi ama keyboardis dari band, uhm... lupa. Polyester Embassy? suara keyboardnya lucu!! mereka juga main pake suling, si drummer pake segitiga yg bunyi ting² gitu... waaauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

pas acoustic set selesai, main beberapa lagu lagi, kereeeennnn, si gitaris yg rambutnya dilurusin sempet pake penggesek biola/cello buat main gitar XD XD XD gw langsung heboh sms Zazu. gw udah gak afal aja mereka mainin lagu apa aja, banyak banget, yg jelas ada Did I Ask Your Opinion, Damned Woman, Live in N.Y, No Hook, Alright, Let It Go, New Generation (gw kira judulnya Noodle Generation, krn liriknya "we are the noodle generation" hahahah) dan finally "ini lagu terkahir dari kita" dan dan dan dan anggota Speaker's First pada ikutan naik ke panggung dan main sama² :') pada heboh ikutan mukulin drum dll... selesai, lights out. tapi tetep dong, "we want more! we want more!" dan tentunya The S.I.G.I.T pada masuk lagi.
